2 Boats crash during hydroplane races on Onondaga Lake

Liverpool, NY - hydroplane boats crashed this afternoon on Onondaga Lake .Two race drivers were taken to University Hospital.

The two drivers were unconscious and one was stuck in the cockpit, but both regained consciousness while being escorted out of the pit area in Onondaga Lake Park to the hospital.

Hydroplane driver Jimmy Shane was speeding into the second turn of the course at about 100 to 130 mph when his boat collided with a boat operated by Pierre Matheu, of Canada, that was not moving.

Apparently Shane never saw the Matheu boat was becalmed

Matheu was pinned in the cockpit and Shane’s boat lighted 20 feet into the air and was thrown 20 feet down the course.

Pierre gave the Fans a thumbs up as they put him in the ambulance.

It was a wet one today at Long Branch park!…After the accident racing was halted on the lake because of weather conditions. Hydrofest will resume at 9 a.m. Sunday at Onondaga Lake Park.
