1988 San Diego, CA. One of the most spectacular Unlimited Hydroplane crashes. A strong crosswind from the ocean caught the drivers of the Miss Circus Circus and Miss Madison off guard as both boats blowover. This is a fairly long clip of the whole incident including live commentary and several replays.

Ron ran the old piston powered Madison for a few years against the turbines. I have some good footage of the old piston powered madison going over as well so it did happen to them as well. I think Ron is still racing his boat Sir Ron III in a different class.

the “heavy” piston boat did blow over. the Holset had a turbo Allison in it. And the Oberto at that time had an old Merlin. The Circus and Holset just hit that ocean breezes and went over.

yeah but who the hell wants to go to a quiet hydroplane race???

No contest. Too expensive to maintain those old Merlin/Griffin engines, not to mention they’re heavy.

I want to see those old piston hydroplanes against modern turbine ones.

“Like a woman, It takes a lot of paint to keep them looking good.” -It’s a quote from the play “To rock the boat” I’ve always equivocated it to that.

Ron Snyder is my brother-in-law and he’s living in Ohio and doing very well for himself. You can’t keep athletes of his caliber down - they just don’t make them like Ron Snyder anymore!

Whenever I saw this in the old days, the driver got killed. Great improvements over the old boats.

That WAS Ron Snyder. I talked to him just yesterday and we’ll see him over Christmas. Type in “historic race boat” on YouTube and you will see him driving the F-333 Aqua Flyer.
