Mark Weber, driver of the Miss Budweiser, had difficulty maneuvering his craft after the Miss Elam ended up riding on top during a 1998 race at Seafair. “There was so much weight on the boat,” Weber said. “I was just trying to turn left as hard as I could.” Both Weber and Miss Elam driver Jimmy King finally stopped about 15 feet from the log boom, which was crowded with spectators on boats with some spectators in the water to cool down on a hot day. “Basically, we were coming into the corner really hot, and the skid fin didn’t hook up,” King said. “I went to turn, and I was too far out of the water. “I was waiting for it (the skid fin) to come back down, and it never came down, and that’s when I realized I was on top of him.” During the initial collision, the Miss Elam slashed through the left pontoon on the Miss Budweiser, causing it to fill with water. If not for assistance from the emergency crew and their flotation device it appears the craft would have completely sunk.
